Mac Font Musings
by John Callaway03 Sep 2004 - Working in an industry that relies heavily on design, I understand the importance of fonts. There is a long standing practice in the publishing field that to remove any potential text reflow issues, all fonts are removed from the system. Now, if a customer has a Helvetica font in which all of the letters have unique s p a c i n g , this could cause a big problem if you substituted the wrong font. All is well and good, until you try to run an application that requires certain fonts.
Fun With the JVM
by John Callaway03 Sep 2004 - Companies like Microsoft have been the target of a lot of criticism lately. This is not completely without merit. Microsoft is guilty of a few dirty deeds. Among the relevant matters, the XP look and feel (crayon, as I like to call it) seems to play funny tricks with JButtons and JComboBox. Even in the MetalLookAndFeel, which was supposed to remain consistent across platforms, this funny business still occurs. Microsoft is not alone this time.
